As for reconstruction, I generally agree especially when it comes to the effects of what were essentially the Marshall Plan.

I don't know if we could match that level of success though. The US interest, policy, and situation at home (both economically and culturally) do not seem to be at the appropriate levels for a "Leader in Europe" position again.

We seem very hard pressed to figure out who we want to be on the world stage, and I think (rightfully) our focus is shifting towards China.

In my opinion, propping up NATO and the EU has been our goal so we can pass the buck in Europe and still receive the mutual defense and economic benefit. I think Europe would agree.

Could be totally wrong. Thoughts?
