In no way do I mention that the West is attempting friendship with Russia, or should. Rather, that the West recognizes whatever the outcome of Russia's war, Russia will maintain itself as a regional if not world power. Whether it is due to their economy, their military, their nuclear capability, their partnerships with other powers (China for example) it does not matter - Russia will stay relevant in the years to come, and conceding some cordiality to them helps to ensure a "Ukraine Crisis 2.0" doesn't happen again in 20, 30, etc. years.

So long as the desire for a multipolar world entices nations like Russia to act the way they do, the US and the West have a problem, and that problem is a concern that supersedes Ukraine's "wants" in the eyes of the West.
