A Right-wing Coalition in the Netherlands?
In November 2023, the Netherlands had a general election which saw conservative politicians elected to the House of Representatives at a rate higher than anticipated.
The PVV parts, with Geert Wilders, took 23.5% of votes which secured them 37 votes, gaining 20.
The conservative politicians in the Netherlands have shared many ideological differences, however, which has led to disagreements on policy and governance. The Dutch politicians have failed to form a government, and Geert Wilders famously said he would not sit as Prime Minister without his conservative counterparts endorsing him.
That could be changing.
On May 18, media outlets began reporting that the following parties had agreed to a coalition:
- PVV (Geert Wilders)
- VVD (Dilan Yesilgoez)
- NSC (Pieter Omtzigt)
- BBB (Caroline van der Plas)
Previously, the conservative parties in the Netherlands had failed to form a coalition, and therefore a government, due to major differences in ideology and the policies put forth by Geert Wilders.
Wilders has become a controversial figure. He ran his campaign on anti-Islam, anti-immigration, and EU skepticism. He supports policies that favor a Dutch reclamation of their country, culture, and self-determination. His ideology has been described as far-right, nationalist, and populist.
However, a recent willingness to compromise has led to a coalition agreement in principle. All that awaits is the formal creation of the government, and a nomination to the Prime Minister position (who is certain to be Wilders).
A document titled Hope, Courage, and Pride outlines the agreement, as well as the intended trajectory of the government in terms of policy.

Many Leftist leaders and media outlets have touted the situation as a disastrous upset, and we will certainly watch for that evidence.
